    Last year’s extreme weather events, including the devasting floods witnessed in central and eastern Europe and Spain, have brought physical climate risks into focus for Europe more than ever.

    As real estate faces increased risks from the rising frequency and severity of extreme weather events, alongside the transition to net zero, the impact on the industry is becoming clearer in terms of financial costs and business interruption.

    While the issues around the insurance and financing of real estate from climate risks are widely acknowledged by the industry, current levels of awareness and collaboration do not reflect the scale and urgency of the challenge.

    Laurent Lavergne

    Global Head of Sustainability, AXA IM Alts

    Laurent Lavergne is Global Head of Sustainability. In his role, Laurent is responsible for the development and deployment of AXA IM Alts sustainability strategy across all AXA IM Alts business lines comprising Real Estate, Infrastructure, Alternative Credit and Natural Capital & Impact Investments. Laurent has also been a member of the AXA Im Alts Real Estate Investment Committee since 2013. Prior to his current role, Laurent was Global Head of Asset Management & Development, leading on the strategy for a global and highly diversified real estate portfolio. Before that, Laurent held the roles of Co-Head of Fund Management and Head of Separate Accounts and International Development (2013-2016) for AXA IM Alts. Additionally, he was also Head of Fund Management for AXA Group’s clients for AXA IM - Real Assets from 2007. From 1999 to 2007, Laurent was Global Head of Corporate Finance at AXA IM - Real Assets, working on the structuring and execution of numerous real estate transactions on a global basis, as well as the structuring of funds, club deals and joint ventures, debt financing negotiations and currency/rate hedging. Laurent has more than 30 years of experience in real estate investment and management and has been at AXA IM Alts since 1994. Laurent holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Ecole de Management de Normandie, with his chosen field of study Accounting & Finance.

    Simon Chinn

    Vice President Research & Advisory Services, Urban Land Institute - Europe

    Simon is Vice President, Research & Advisory Services at the Urban Land Institute (ULI), where he is responsible for managing its innovative research agenda covering the key issues shaping the future of the real estate industry including climate change and sustainability, investment and development trends and shifts in demography and technological change. Prior to joining ULI, Simon specialised in research on global cities and real estate for Grosvenor, one of the world’s largest privately-owned international property businesses. Simon’s role involved undertaking analysis on global city developments to inform the company’s long-term strategy and thinking on cities. He has undertaken major research projects on megatrends for real estate, examining topics such as urbanisation, demographic change, digital disruption and climate change. Simon also has previous experience working in urban planning, economic development and strategic consulting for the retail sector. He holds an MSc in Urban Economic Development from The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London.

    Amy Barnes

    Head of Climate and Sustainability Strategy, Marsh, MarshMcLennan Agency

    Amy leads our global Sustainability & Climate Change strategy. Prior to this Amy held a number of leadership roles with Marsh’s Global Energy, Power & Renewables business. Amy has a respected depth and breadth of experience assisting some of the largest and most complex companies manage risks. This experience enables Amy to have a deep understanding of a wide range of clients’ risk management approaches and can offer a number of perspectives to insurance and risk management discussions. Amy started her career as an environmental consultant, largely providing advice and guidance to regulatory bodies. She joined Marsh as an environmental insurance broker and from there spent time on secondment with a major plc client, gaining an understanding of risk and insurance issues from a client perspective. Amy has 20 years of relevant industry experience with Marsh. In her current role Amy has created a multi-award winning ESG risk rating tool and leads our advisory to clients on climate risk and sustainability strategy for both financial institutions and the real economy. She leads Marsh’s engagement with global insurers to drive the development of insurance products that support the transition and reward sustainability. Amy is passionate about the climate specific solutions she has created in support of sustainable rebuilds and improved mitigation and resilience.

    Lindsay Brugger

    Vice President, Urban Resilience, Urban Land Institute

    Lindsay Brugger is Vice President, Urban Resilience for the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a global nonprofit organization comprising more than 45,000 real estate and urban development professionals dedicated to advancing the Institute’s mission of shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. Ms. Brugger leads ULI’s Urban Resilience Program to advance the real estate industry’s understanding of climate risk, catalyze action to reduce vulnerability, and support communities in becoming more climate resilient. A licensed architect, certified passive house consultant, and frequent speaker, Ms. Brugger has worked for over a decade at the intersection of resilience, adaptation, and the built environment. She began her career as a practicing architect; extending her services to Architecture for Humanity DC where she co-founded and directed the Resilience by Design Program. Prior to joining ULI, Ms. Brugger was the Director of Resilience Knowledge and Engagement at the American Institute of Architects. During her tenure, she championed resilience, climate adaptation, and disaster assistance; creating tools and resources to help AIA’s 95,000 architects build new skillsets, integrate resilience into practice, and support their communities pre- and post-disaster. An avid partner in advancing resilience action throughout the building industry, Ms. Brugger often serves as a subject matter expert on climate adaptation and the built environment, supporting organizations and initiatives such as the National Institute of Building Sciences, the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit. Ms. Brugger received a Master of Architecture and B.S. in Architecture from Roger Williams University; as well as the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for her leadership and service.
